Happy Sleeps

By Katherine B. Parilli

Happy my dear sweet pup it is time for you to go to bed.

I know your head is heavy,

that you have grown tired of struggling,

and that you long to lay down and rest.

Happy my precious pup,

do not worry about me,

and like you dear Grandpa before you,

lay your head upon God’s strong shoulder.

Feel His loving arms wrap around you,

as you gently fall asleep.

Happy my precious bundle of joy,

for so long you brought laughter into my life,

and you brought joy into our home.

It seems like only yesterday your sweet smile brightened our home.

How fast the hands of cruel time have flown by,

and has made your greying head weary.

Oh Happy my little pup,

if only to Heaven we could now fly.

How joyful I would be,

to skip this dreadfully lonely time of waiting.

In my arms I would eagerly scoop up my loved ones,

and rush them to the beckoning gates of that wondrous land where death is unknown.

Oh Happy, my dear little doggie,

I know that your limbs are pleading to lay down their burdens,

to forget their aching,

and join Grandpa and waiting for the blessed morning.

I know that if it were not for my tears,

my earnest prayers of pleading for just a little more time,

you would have gladly gone to sleep.

Oh my sweet little Happy,

so full of love for all of us,

eager to please,

eager to share your overflowing joy,

with trembling hand I place you in God’s arms,

I kiss you goodnight,

and with a fervent hug,

I eagerly wait for the morning.
